ABOUT KALAMAKI IN SOUTH CRETE
In the South of Crete between Matala and Agia Galini is the wonderful coastal settlement of Kalamaki. Kalamaki is famous for its large sandy and comfortable beach with crystal clear waters.
The beach has sunbeds with umbrellas and lifeguard services as well as the possibility to do water sports, showers, playground for our little friends, and plenty of space to enjoy the tranquility of the beach overlooking the Libyan Sea.
In addition to the settlement there is a mini market, bakery and various tourist shops, you will also find taverns offering extremely fresh fish and traditional Cretan casserole dishes enjoying excellent food overlooking the endless view of the Libyan Sea.
From May to September the beach in Kalamaki becomes an attraction for Caretta-Caretta turtles which arrive here to lay their eggs in the warm sand. During the rest of the year, however, the area has a special charm and beauty with soothing vegetation.
With a rental car you can make many excursions either to archeological sites such as Phaistos, Agia Triada and Gortyna or to the plain of Messara with the very beautiful villages and the mouth of the river Geropotamos where you will observe the flora and fauna of the wetland. You can also visit many secluded but beautiful beaches of Kommos, Pachia Ammos and Afrathia.
